Books for Veterans Day

I am the daughter of a veteran, and so Veterans Day has always been important to me. My love of history and World War 1 has also had an affect on me as far as Veterans Day goes. I was thrilled to find the book The Poppy Lady, by Barbara Elizabeth Walsh. This book tells the story of Moina Belle Michael and of how the poppy became a symbol for veterans. I HIGHLY reommend this book as a read aloud for grades 2 and up. I was only able to read it to second grade but plan to read it to 3-5 next year. After listening to the story and discussing it, the kids made poppy pictures (see below) to hang outside their classrooms in preparation for our Veterans Day Program and the visit of several veterans.

A simpler Veterans Day book I found was Otto's Tales Today is Veterans Day, by Prager University. I bought the book on Amazon but then visited the Prager Kids page and was surprised to find several good sources. Otto's Tales is a tv show, but there also have several books for lower elementary ages.
The first graders who I read the book to really enjoyed it, and I plan to read it to kindergarten next year as well as first grade. It really was a fun book!
