Fall Fun in the Library

With my second fall in the library I have made a few changes/updates. I added a couple of new books for some grades but kept the books that were favorites last year. I had to leave off some activities because of altered schedules, field trips, programs, etc. You know how things get busy once the year really kicks off. Below is a recap of October and November this year.I hope you enjoy reading about it as much as I enjoyed planning and teaching through this gorgeous fall season!

New Books/Activities for this Year:

  • Rosie's Walk (TK) -- I have loved this book since I used it to teach positional words in kindergarten MANY years ago. With the TK'ers, I worked on positional words also. I gave them each a large "Rosie" and we played a Simon Says-type game. We also got out the Bee Bot. I made a Bee Bot mat using the locations in the book, and they programmed the bot to go to a certain location. (Rosie's Walk Bee Bot Mat cards attached below)
  • Have You Seen My Acorn? (K) -- This was a new book for me. The kids and I really enjoyed it. I have already ordered a couple other books about the same cute squirrel, The Snow Thief and The Flower Thief
  • Every Autumn Comes the Bear (K) -- This book was already here in the library, but I did not read it last year. I liked the order in it, how the bear works his way through the woods, passing other animals, heading towards his hibernation spot. I made a Bee Bot mat to go with this book also. (attached below)
  • In the Middle of Fall (K) -- This is a book by Kevin Henkes. Although I have several of his books in the library, I did not have this one. I love it! The illustrattions are amazing. After reading it, the kids completed a class Fall 5 Senses Chart.
  • Home in the Woods (3rd) -- I read this book last year but did not blog about it. The kids and I all loved this book. After I read it, it was requested for check out for several weeks. I chose it because third grade was studying the forest biome. I love it because it is historical fiction, the story is so moving, and the illustrations are captivating. (When one boy took it home, his mom heard him explaining the illustrations to his preschool-aged brother!) I highly recommend this book.
  • Because of an Acorn (3rd) -- This is a beautifully illustrated reread from last year, but this year i created a Bee Bot mat to accompany it. Since these kids are older, they had to program the bot to go to two consecutive locations instead of just one as TK and K did. (attached below)
  • Acorn was a Little Wild (3rd) -- This was a new-to-me book that I saw recommended on Instagram. The kids and I all liked it. It was a fun way to move into the acorn chute activity which was a favorite again this year. This was our most creative chute, and it actually worked every single time!
These were all great books and super fun activities that the kids enjoyed and learned from.

**I print these cards in two sizes -- one the original size which prints about 6"x 6" to fit in standard Bee Bot mat. (Full disclosure: I have to do some trimming.) I also print "4 to a page" to use as task cards. The kids select the task cards to find out where they need to send the Bee Bot.

I hope you enjoy the books and the activities as much as the kids and I did!
