Can you believe this???? Look who showed up at our school today!!! Pigeon, the famous Pigeon from Mo Willems' books. It was SO much fun, especially for the littles. Here's the story...
This summer, while scrolling on Instagram, I actually came across something useful. There is a costume company (Costume Specialists) that "rents" costumes to schools and other organizations. They have a ton of book characters. I decided then and there to surprise my kids with Pigeon. I contacted the company and got it set up. The "rent" is actually the shipment of the costume to its next location, and would be $190, which would come out of my library budget.
The costume arrived yesterday in a huge box. We put the box in a prominent location just to get the kids curious. That worked!!! The original "Pigeon Day" was supposed to be next Monday, but because of the threat of bad weather, we did some switching around and did it today. I found senior intern willing to wear the costume (which is vey elaborate) and willing to spend some time being the Pigeon. She came early to be dressed. There are several pieces to the outfit which you can see here,
We got Hannah all fixed up and ready to go to the gym for morning assembly. I warned her ahead of time that she might be mobbed. She was. The bell rang soon, and the kids all sat down, staring at the Pigeon constantly.
After her cameo appearance at assembly, we carefully made our way to the TK classrooms for her feature performance. She was in several group shots, and then we took individual shots with each TK'er who wanted to stand with her. I read Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, and then we made our way back to the library.
Hannah was very hot and ready to get out of the costume. I got it all put back in the box, and the shipping company has already been here for pickup. These are the things that continue to make me love it in the library!
