Somewhere Over the Rainbow...A TK STEM Lab

Our TK STEM Lab for the month of March focused on rainbows, and the kids had so much fun! They experimented with rainbow colors, drew rainbows, built rainbows, and just thoroughly immersed themselves in rainbows. Below are the 10 stations we had with accompanying pictures so you can see how involved and excited the kids were. I highly recommend each of these centers. As usual, each center had 2 kids; they stayed there for 5 minutes. We ran 5 rotations of the 10 centers one week and 5 rotations of the same 10 centers the next week. This keeps the kids from getting antsy, and they always look forward to Fridays, our STEM Lab day!

Stations:

  • Draw a rainbow with markers
  • Create a rainbow with pony beads on a pipe-cleaner
  • Lightboards and geometric shapes -- create a rainbow
  • Build a rainbow with magnitiles
  • Rainbow floor puzzle
  • Shaving cream food coloring experiment ( Shaving Cream Rainbow Experiment Link)
  • Milk, detergent, food coloring experiment (Milk Rainbow Experiment Link)
  • Catapult Lucky Charms marshmallows (including rainbows) into Lucky Cups
  • Magnetic blocks -- build a rainbow
  • Watercolor an Easter Egg (not exactly a rainbow center)

Friday TK STEM lab is one of my favorite times of the week!. I really researching and planning the centers and then seeing which ones work well for the kids. There are sometimes some flops, but that's just part of the learning experience for me. I am always looking for ways to do things better, so that the kids get the most out of their learning experience!
